LiveScan Frequently Asked Questions

LiveScan, which is a form of fingerprinting that is quickly becoming the most requested background check method, is an important part of many employment prescreening processes. The following are a few of the most frequently asked questions about the process.

What Is LiveScan Fingerprinting?

LiveScan fingerprinting is a digitized method of obtaining fingerprints for background checks. This method is preferred over traditional ink and paper methods as it uses digital, inkless printing to minimize mistakes. Once the fingerprints are taken, they are then sent electronically to the Department of Justice for processing, with results in as little as 72 hours.

What Is Needed for a LiveScan?

If you are required to submit to a LiveScan process, there are a few things you will need to bring with you. You must provide a photo ID, which can include your driver’s license, state ID or passport. You will also need to make sure you have three copies of the LiveScan request form from the employer. The location where you are having your scan done cannot provide you with the forms, or help you fill them out, so it is important that you don’t lose them. Depending on whether the organization requesting the LiveScan is billed for services, you may be required to pay for all or a portion of your scan at the time of services as well.

Do I Need Multiple LiveScans?

Each LiveScan you take is only provided for the agency requesting it. This means that your results cannot be transferred to another business. You will have to resubmit your fingerprints so that they can go through the same process again so that the results can be sent on to the new agency.

How Soon Will the Results be Available?

In most cases, LiveScan results are ready and sent to the requesting company within 72 hours. If there are any issues, the Department of Justice will contact the company with more information, including whether your fingerprints did not come through completely. If not, you may need to submit your fingerprints again for the process to be completed.
